The Connection:
I met Yogi very briefly during my high school playing days (circa 2015) at an Elite 11 regional event in Los Angeles. Roughly 8 years later, I heard him discuss his book, 5-Star QB, on Ryen Russillo's podcast. I immediately bought and read it—a massive research effort featuring interviews with over 50 quarterbacks who were once rated 5-star prospects, including Max Browne (Under the Number Episode 17), Keller Chryst (Episode 14), Brandon Dawkins (Episode 13), and Jacob Eason (Episode 10).
I then DM'd Yogi on LinkedIn with an idea to bring the book to life by breaking chapters into newsletter-format individual pieces... Next thing I knew, I was a thought partner on what became Y-Option, Yogi’s media company where "5-Star Advice" is now a component of their content offering.
Quote of the Episode:
"The best coaches - Pete [Carroll], John Wooden, Coach K, Phil Jackson – I believe there are two commonalities: One is they are dramatically consistent in thought—uncommonly consistent—and then they are independent in that thought."
Bet You Didn’t Know:
Yogi was a walk-on receiver at Pitt, where he eventually earned a scholarship and was teammates with Larry Fitzgerald.
